This year’s International Women in Engineering Day's (23 June 2020) theme is #ShapeTheWorld, raising the profile of many female engineers on their amazing achievements across the world!
The ‘International Women in Engineering Day’ campaign was originally launched in 2014 by the Women’s Engineering Society who have worked incredibly hard since 1919 to create equality for women in engineering whilst generating awareness for those who wish to pursue a career within the industry.
As a leading recruitment agency within the engineering and technical sector, TXM Recruit strongly believes in equality and diversity, supporting a wide community across the industry with women in engineering being one of them. James Wall, Managing Director at TXM Recruit comments: “The team at TXM are and will continue to champion females within the Engineering sector. With women comprising less than 8% of positions, we feel that for continued equality, innovation not to mention the need to bridge the skills shortage gap, the promotion of women and young females joining the sector is critical.”
TXM Recruit supports Women in Transport, a non-profit organisation who are committed to promoting equality, diversity and inclusion within the transport sector. TXM also works closely with Work Tree, visiting schools and encouraging young students to consider engineering as a career of choice as well as highlighting the opportunities that are available to them after their studies.
James Wall highlights the influence this has had at TXM internally: “TXM is a key sponsor and participant of Women in Transport and we take our responsibility very seriously. An example of this is the increased hiring of females internally at TXM Recruit. Over the past four years, our business has grown significantly meaning we have increased our internal recruitment teams. In turn, our gender representation percentage has narrowed with our internal workforce now being represented by 52% male and 48% female.
“We are proud of the female engineers and internal recruitment consultants that represent TXM but acknowledge that the challenge to attract and retain females within the industry will take continued effort, awareness and support. TXM stands for going The Xtra Mile and that is what we intend to do in support of Women in Engineering.”
#ShapeTheWorld
TXM Recruit’s Team Leader for FMCG James Powell recently placed a female candidate who has rapidly progressed within her engineering career: “This particular candidate was great to work with and support in progressing to the next stage of their career. Having completed their technical qualifications, the candidate started their career in production engineering, working within a hands-on production floor environment, that is typically a male led and a more blue-collar environment. They then enjoyed quick progression into strategic people management and project management positions and will now manage a team within an international business, working with multiple departments and sites.
“It has been particularly interesting to see the variety of their work and successes across many different engineering specialisms and how she is now acting as a mentor for other women to work within the engineering and technical sector!”
So, whether you’re an engineer or not, get involved with International Women in Engineering Day 2020 and share each other’s successes and achievements on those who have helped shape the world as we know it today!
